Google likes fast websites, so if yours is slow you can forget about being on the first page of Google. What's the difference between one web hosting company and another? Speed - That's what really counts. But then again - it depends on which company you go with for your web hosting. They might try to sell you on the idea that's it's very complicated and you need to be a super genius to understand web hosting. You want to make sure the hosting account is under YOUR name, not the web designer's name.
I can't tell you how many times I've had this conversation. Good for their business, bad for your wallet. They want to make sure you pay them for every little change.
I've often run into web developers will put your website on their hosting account, and they won't give you the password.
